    Performance investigation of WOFDM for 5G wireless networks

    Nowadays, emerging wireless networks scenarios such as the proposed systems for 5G is discussed widely with diverse requirements. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a conservative proposal which is used to build 5G WOFDM system (Wavelet OFDM system). The simulation of the system is initialized with BPSK then with QAM and 64-QAM the system is improved by increasing the number of levels of Discrete Wavelet Transform to five levels and finally compared with original system to prove that the it is convenient for 5G Wireless networks

    Evaluation of the virucidal efficacy of commercial antiviral drugs against Lasota virus a surrogate for enveloped viruses

    Many antivirals are commonly used in Iraq’s poultry farms and there is controversy about effective of these commercial antiviral drugs. The aim of this study was tested individually for the effectiveness of these commercial antiviral drugs. Four kinds of commercial antiviral drugs including VIRUX®, TopAMD®, V8® and Licorice® was used in this study. Lasota virus was used as a surrogate for enveloped viruses. The following tests: Spot hemagglutination, Antigen Rapid NDV Ag Test Kit, Electron microscopy, qRTPCR and Egg inoculation in order to determine the effect of these antivirals on hemagglutinating activity, a viral protein, viral morphology, virus titer and viral infectivity respectively. All antivirals had no toxic effect on the chicken embryos. All these antivirals had no effect on haemagglutination activity except Licorice. No antivirals changed nucleoprotein antigenicity of Lasota virus. All antivirals had no effect on the morphology of the virus except Licorice destroyed the viral morphology and decreased in viral spikes. Three of the four antiviral reduced the viral titer while Licorice complete degradation of viral RNA and prevent detection it by qRTPCR. The allantoic fluid harvested from inoculated eggs with the treated Lasota virus with antivirals showed a remarkable decrease in viral infectivity as following: TopAMP about 20%, V8 40%, and Virux 60% while Licorice showed a complete reduction of viral infectivity (100%). In conclusion, the Licorice revealed the best antiviral activity

    Rapid Identification of Human Adenoviruses and Cytokine Estimation among Patients with Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis in Babylon Governorate, Iraq

    One hundred seventy five conjunctival swabs were collected from patients with keratoconjunctivitis. All swabs were cultured on Blood agar and MacConkey agar , 82 positive bacterial culture isolates were excluded and 93 negative bacterial culture isolates were taken as a study samples. All 93 swabs were subjected to rapid immunochromatography test (IC) test. The results of rapid identification revealed that 79 specimens (84.9%) were found positive for human adenoviruses , whereas 14 specimens (15.1%) were found negative for human adenoviruses. In addition , the results indicated that the positive rate of the IC test for specimens obtained within 1–5 days after of the onset of illness 59 (74.7%) were significantly higher than that for specimens obtained within 6–10 days after of the onset of illness 20 (25.3%) at P-value < 0.05.Tear samples were also collected from both (30) patients and (25) controls to estimate the tear levels of some immune parameters Interleukine-6  (IL-6), Interlukine-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) by ELISA (Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay) method .The cytokine profile showed that there is a significant increase (P<0.05) in the mean tear concentration of each (IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α) between EKC patients and control groups , and the result showed that IL-8 was the predominant cytokine released and followed by IL-6 and TNF-α .     Intrathoracic solitary fibrous tumor - an international multicenter study on clinical outcome and novel circulating biomarkers

    Intrathoracic solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare disease. Radical resection is the standard of care. However, estimating prognosis and planning follow-up and treatment strategies remains challenging. Data were retrospectively collected by five international centers to explore outcome and biomarkers for predicting event-free-survival (EFS). 125 histological proven SFT patients (74 female; 59.2%; 104 benign; 83.2%) were analyzed. The one-, three-, five- and ten-year EFS after curative-intent surgery was 98%, 90%, 77% and 67%, respectively. Patients age (>/=59 vs. 10 cm vs. 5 vs. < 5 HR 3.91, CI 1.40-10.89, p = 0.009) were prognostic after univariate analyses. After multivariate analyses tumor-dignity and fibrinogen remained as independent prognosticators. Besides validating the role of age, tumor-dignity, tumor-size, stage and resection margins, we identified for the first time inflammatory markers as prognosticators in SFT

    Osteoporosis is a neglected health priority in Arab World: a comparative bibliometric analysis

    Osteoporosis is an important health problem with serious consequences. Evaluation of osteoporosis scientific output from Arab countries has not been explored and there are few internationally published reports on research activity about osteoporosis. The main objectives of this study were to analyze the research output originating from Arab countries and 3 Middle Eastern non-Arab countries, particularly Israel, Turkey and Iran in the field of osteoporosis. Original scientific articles or reviews published from the 21 Arab countries, Israel, Turkey and Iran about “osteoporosis” were screened using the ISI Web of Science database. The time frame for the result was up to year 2012. The total number of original and review research articles published globally about osteoporosis was 43,571. The leading country in osteoporosis research was United States of America (14,734; 33.82%). Worldwide, Turkey ranked 16th while Israel and Iran ranked 24th and 31st respectively. Among Arab countries, Egypt and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia came on positions 41 and 45 respectively. A total of 426 documents about “osteoporosis” were published from Arab countries which represents 0.98% of the global research output. Research about osteoporosis from Arab countries was very low until 2002 and then increased steadily. The total number of citations for osteoporosis documents from the Arab world was 5551 with an average citation of 13.03 per document and an h- index of 35. Thirty (7.04%) documents published from Arab countries about osteoporosis were published in Saudi Medical Journal. Egypt, with a total publication of 117 (27.47%) ranked first among the Arab countries in research about osteoporosis while American University in Beirut was the most productive institution with a total of 47 (11.03%) documents. Compared with other non-Arab countries in the Middle East, the research productivity from the Arab countries was lesser than that from Turkey and Israel but higher than that from Iran. The present data showed low research productivity in osteoporosis field in Arab countries. Research output can be improved by investing in more international and national collaborative research projects in the field of osteoporosis

    Identification of Basophils as a Major Source of Hepatocyte Growth Factor in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: A Novel Mechanism of BCR-ABL1-Independent Disease Progression

    AbstractChronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematopoietic neoplasm characterized by the Philadelphia chromosome and the related BCR-ABL1 oncoprotein. Acceleration of CML is usually accompanied by basophilia. Several proangiogenic molecules have been implicated in disease acceleration, including the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). However, little is known so far about the cellular distribution and function of HGF in CML. We here report that HGF is expressed abundantly in purified CML basophils and in the basophil-committed CML line KU812, whereas all other cell types examined expressed only trace amounts of HGF or no HGF. Interleukin 3, a major regulator of human basophils, was found to promote HGF expression in CML basophils. By contrast, BCR-ABL1 failed to induce HGF synthesis in CML cells, and imatinib failed to inhibit expression of HGF in these cells. Recombinant HGF as well as basophil-derived HGF induced endothelial cell migration in a scratch wound assay, and these effects of HGF were reverted by an anti-HGF antibody as well as by pharmacologic c-Met inhibitors. In addition, anti-HGF and c-Met inhibitors were found to suppress the spontaneous growth of KU812 cells, suggesting autocrine growth regulation. Together, HGF is a BCR-ABL1-independent angiogenic and autocrine growth regulator in CML. Basophils are a unique source of HGF in these patients and may play a more active role in disease-associated angiogenesis and disease progression than has so far been assumed. Our data also suggest that HGF and c-Met are potential therapeutic targets in CML

    Sustainable Treatment of Acidic and Alkaline Leachates from Mining and Industrial Activities: Current Practice and Future Perspectives

    Water resources are under continued pressure from anthropogenic sources, including acidic waste from abandoned mine sites and alkaline waste from a variety of industrial activities. Large quantities of mine and industrial wastes are typically stored in tailings facilities which can generate significant quantities of leachates due to weathering. If released untreated to the aquatic environment these have the potential to contaminate surface and ground waters. In addition, generation of leachates from abandoned or closed sites presents a major long-term environmental challenge where the generation of leachates is expected to continue for decades if not centuries post closure. An overview of leachate production and associated treatment technologies are described, with an emphasis on passive and potentially sustainable technologies. Measures to prevent the formation of acidic leachates and the potential for resource recovery from acidic and alkaline wastes and leachates are also discussed. Finally, technologies that require further development for long term and sustainable treatment are highlighted
